What does the Bible say about life and death?

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God solved our problem of sin and death by offering us forgiveness and eternal life through His Son. So, there are two kinds of life and two kinds of death. There is physical life and physical death and there is spiritual life and spiritual death. Each of us who is born physically will die physically, and in this we have no choice. However, when it comes to spiritual life and spiritual death, we are given the choice. Romans 10:13 says, “Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” The Lord Jesus told us why this is possible: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Jesus also said of Himself, “I am the way and the truth and the life...” (John 14:6), and “I am the resurrection and the life...” (John 11:25). Therefore, to have eternal life, all we must do is trust in the One who is life, Jesus. To trust Jesus as Savior and Lord is to receive eternal life. Death is a part of physical life and God sees death as precious for those who know His Son (Psalm 116:15), but physical life doesn’t have to be the end of life. Pastor Rogers used to say, “If you’re only born once, you’ll die twice; but praise God if you’re born twice, you’ll only die once.” With Jesus, death is precious, but death without Jesus is tragic. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
