What does God say about our souls?

What does God say about our souls? In Mark chapter 8, Jesus asks a couple of questions about the soul of a man. “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37). In these questions, God says three things about our souls.

1. My soul is mine to do with as I desire; “his own soul.”

God created and gave a soul to each of us. Therefore, each of us must decide how we will use it or what we will do with it.

2. The soul has great value; “what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world...”

If I had the whole world, I’d have all the silver, gold, diamonds, etc., in it. Yet all the wealth in the world would not compare to the worth of my soul to the Lord.

3. To whom or what I devote my soul matters eternally.

“Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” I choose the destiny of my soul based on the value placed upon it in my choice. If I choose to exchange it for what the world offers (man’s way) my soul’s destiny is eternal separation from God in a place called Hell. “And do not fear those who kill the body (man) but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him (God) who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). However, if I choose to give my soul back to the God who created it and gave it to me in the first place, then I choose eternity with God in Heaven.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
