What are the benefits of being one with your spouse?

What are the benefits of being one with your spouse? Ultimate oneness with your spouse comes from both husband and wife having a growing relationship with the Lord Jesus! When that happens, the benefits of that kind of oneness are God’s blessings on the marriage. These blessings may at times be tangible—such as possessions or finances. The best blessings, however, are intangible. They are things only God can give. Such as:

Peace

“Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them” (Colossians 3:19).
“Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, maybe won by the conduct of their wives” (1 Peter 3:1).
When the Lord is the central theme of the marriage, both parties seek to love and respect each other in all circumstances. This oneness creates an environment of peace for them and for the whole family.

Joy

“Husbands love your wives, just as Christ also loves the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25).
Generally speaking, if the husband will love his wife sacrificially, she in turn will do the same toward him. This type of love for each other creates a joy in togetherness that does not compare with anything else.

Love with Contentment

“So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church” (Ephesians 5:28-29).

Take note that the first phrase, as were two of the others above, instructs husbands to love their wives. The command to love begins with the husband first. It is much easier for most women to love because of their natural motherly instincts, whereas the man’s instinct is to desire respect. If men will continue to lovingly pursue their wives, the Lord will bless that action because it mimics how Jesus continually and lovingly pursues each of us. This constant pursuit not only enhances the love in a marriage but also creates contentment in a bond of oneness that is not easily broken.

These are just some of the benefits of true oneness in a marriage that is built with Jesus as its central foundation.
