Eat the Right Spiritual Food

“I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.”

1 John 2:12

Ponder This

What does it take to grow? First, we’ve got to have a birth. Secondly, growth takes time. Third, we have to be constantly feeding on the Word of God. Little babies will eat junk food if you’ll give it to them, and little babies will put anything in their mouths. We must be careful in the Church that we don’t do the same. This is one reason growth is so important. We must not entertain and take in teachings that are opposed to the Word of God and the truth of the Gospel. The world will tell us that there is no danger in valuing teachings from all different religions, but Jesus made it clear that He is the only way, truth, and life. (See John 14:6.) Little babies will put anything in their mouths because they don’t understand. We are called to grow in discernment as we grow in our knowledge of and love for the Word of God.

  • Where might you need better discernment in regard to the type of teachings you value and regularly think on?
  • As you’ve spent time in the Bible, in what ways have you grown spiritually?

Make a list of ways Jesus is exclusive from any other religion. Keep the list handy to review.

Just as plants need certain essentials to grow—light, water, and fertile soil—so do new Christians, babes in the faith. Without these essential basic truths of the faith, they will never establish strong roots or bear fruit. What Every Christian Ought to Know is a valuable volume for new Christians and young disciples and a suitably instructive resource for believers of all ages. This new paperback edition includes discussion questions for personal reflection or group study.
