How To Enjoy The Presence Of God

Exodus 33:1-3
(RA-1974, Programs: 3317 & 3417, Air dates: 08.13.17 & 08.20.17)

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. Worship is enjoying the presence of God.
    2. Some of the most frightening words in the Bible are found in Exodus 33:1-3, where God gave the children of Israel His protection, provision, and His promise, but not His presence.
      1. Moses was upon Mt. Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from the Lord.
        1. Exodus 32:4-10
      2. While Moses was gone, his brother Aaron led the people in a revolt against God.
      3. The people gave Aaron their bracelets and earrings, out of which Aaron made a golden calf that the people worshiped.
        1. Exodus 32:30-32
      4. Due to their sin, the Lord decided to remove His presence from them.  He would give the people His protection and provision, He would fulfill His promise to give them the land of Canaan, but He would not go with them into the land.
        1. Exodus 33:1-4
    3. Many Christians today do not have the conscious presence of God in their lives.
    4. We should not settle for God’s protection, His provision, or even the Promised Land, without His presence. When we have the presence of God, we need nothing more; and we should settle for nothing less.
    5. There are four things that will rob us of God’s manifested presence in our lives and that are the archenemies of worship and enjoying God’s presence.
  2. DIRECT DISOBEDIENCE (Exodus 32:7-8)
    1. Many people confess faith in the Lord Jesus but do not have His presence in their lives; and they do not have the assurance of their salvation.
      1. 1 John 4:13
      2. Romans 8:16
    2. When we willingly and knowingly disobey God, we grieve the Holy Spirit.
      1. Ephesians 4:30
    3. When we grieve the Holy Spirit, we then quench the Spirit.
      1. 1 Thessalonians 5:19
    4. The Holy Spirit is to us what the pillar of cloud and of fire was to the children of Israel.
      1. Exodus 13:21-22
    5. The Holy Spirit is God’s manifested presence in our lives.
    6. When we deliberately disobey God, we grieve the Spirit and quench the Spirit; and when we do that, God ceases to be real in our lives. We can even doubt our salvation.
    7. John 14:21
  3. DIVIDED DEVOTION (Exodus 32:4)
    1. An idol is anything we love more, fear more, serve more, and trust more than God.
    2. Is there anyone or anything that takes precedence over God in our lives?
    3. Is there anyone or anything that is a greater controlling factor of our behavior than God?
    4. Is there a relationship that means more to us?
    5. Is there a treasure that means more to us?
    6. Is there anything that gets more of our attention than God?
  4. DISPLACED DEPENDENCE (Exodus 32:7-8)
    1. When God gives us a victory and we give the glory to someone or something else, we then depend upon that other person or thing rather than upon God; and we will lose the presence of God in our lives.
  5. DETERMINED DEFIANCE (Exodus 32:9)
    1. “Stiff necked” is the opposite of being meek and pliable.
    2. Is there someone God has laid on our hearts to witness to, but we haven’t witnessed to that person?
    3. Has God given us an impulse to serve in a specific capacity, but we have refused?
    4. Has God laid something on our heart that He wants us to give?
    5. Has God laid someone on our heart with whom we need to apologize to and to reconcile?
    6. Has God been telling us that there’s a wrong relationship in our life that we need to break off?
    7. Has God called us into missions or full-time Christian service?
  6. CONCLUSION
    1. Moses did not want to go without the Lord’s presence.
      1. Exodus 33:15
    2. We must not settle for anything less than God’s presence in our lives.
    3. Do you know Jesus personally? If not, you can pray to Him today by asking Him to come into your life.
    4. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life.
    5. Romans 10:9-10
    6. Romans 10:13
