Colossians 1:15-21
(RA-2314, Program: 0818, Air date: 02.25.18)

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. There is only one true God.
      1. He is Jehovah God, the triune God of the Bible.
    2. Jesus Christ is not one of the ways to Heaven; He is the only way.
    3. Jesus Christ is not “a” God; He is “the” God.
    4. Of all the people who have ever lived, none have received more attention, more devotion, more criticism, more adoration and more opposition than Jesus Christ.
    5. Every recorded word that Jesus Christ ever said has been studied and scrutinized.  More than 20 centuries after He walked the Earth, scholars and students alike are considering and studying the significance of His words and actions.
    6. Jesus’ very birth divides history.
      1. Anno Domini - “The Year of Our Lord”
      2. B.C. - “Before Christ”
    7. The Lord Jesus had no formal education, yet countless universities and seminaries have been founded in His name.
    8. To explain Jesus is impossible. To ignore Jesus is disastrous. To deny Him is fatal. We need to understand who Jesus Christ is.
    9. Colossians 1:19
    10. Jesus Christ is not to be prominent in our lives; He is to be pre-eminent.
    11. Jesus doesn’t just show us the way; He is the way.
    12. Jesus doesn’t just give life; He is the life.
    13. Jesus doesn’t just tell the truth; He is the truth.
    14. There are three important truths we will learn about the Lord Jesus Christ in today’s message.
  2. JESUS ALONE REVEALS THE FATHER (Colossians 1:15)
    1. God the Father, in His essence, is spirit and unseeable and unapproachable unless we have some way to come to Him.
    2. Jesus Christ is the one who makes the invisible God knowable; He is the image of the invisible God.
    3. We can never fully know God the Father unless we know God the Father through God the Son.
    4. In Colossians 1:15, the word “image” is the Greek word for “icon.”
      1. This means an exact representation.
      2. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God.
      3. Jesus is God in human flesh.
      4. John 14:9
    5. Colossians 2:9
      1. The term “godhead” in this passage means God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
    6. Matthew 11:27
      1. We cannot know God the Father unless Jesus reveals, or introduces, Him to us.
      2. The only way we can know God the Father is through the Lord Jesus Christ.
    7. Jesus Christ is 100% man and 100% God.
      1. On His mother’s side, He got thirsty. On His Father’s side, He created the oceans and the waters and is Himself the water of life.
        1. Revelation 21:6
      2. On His mother’s side, He got hungry. On His Father’s side, He fed 5,000 and is the bread of life.
        1. John 6:35
      3. On His mother’s side, He lived in poverty and was homeless.  On His Father’s side, He created the universe and owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
      4. On His mother’s side, He wept at the tomb of Lazarus. On His Father’s side, He raised Lazarus from the dead.
        1. John 11:43
    8. In Colossians 1:15, Jesus is referred to as the “firstborn.”
      1. This refers to position or status.
      2. This term does not imply that Jesus was created.
        1. In fact, Jesus Christ created all things.
          1. Colossians 1:16
        2. There was never a time when Jesus was not.
      3. The term “firstborn,” as it refers to position or status, means that Jesus is over everything.
        1. Psalm 89:27
        2. Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords.
  3. JESUS ALONE RULES THE UNIVERSE (Colossians 1:16-17)
    1. Jesus is the power of creation.
      1. The little baby in Matthew 1 is the mighty God of Genesis 1.
      2. To not believe in the creation by the Lord Jesus Christ signals that we have three problems:
        1. A problem with the Scriptures - if we cannot believe the Bible when it tells us from whence we’ve come, how can we trust the Bible when it tells us where we’re going?
        2. A problem with salvation - if we don’t believe in created man, then we don’t believe that man was made perfect and fell into sin. Thus, we don’t believe in the Garden of Eden and the fall of man. If Genesis 3 is a myth, then John 3 (that says that we must be born again) is a farce.
        3. A problem with society - when we believe that we evolved from animals, we should not be surprised when we begin to act like animals.
          1. An animal lives for three things:
            1. Self-gratification
            2. Self-preservation
            3. Self-propagation
    2. Jesus is the preserver of creation.
      1. Colossians 1:16-17
      2. Jesus Christ is the glue of the galaxies; by Jesus, all things consist.
      3. The laws of nature are simply God’s laws that nature obeys.
    3. Jesus is the purpose of all creation.
      1. Colossians 1:16
      2. This world and all creation are coming to Jesus.
      3. The Bible teaches that life is linear and that we are moving toward a climax.
        1. The climax of history will occur when Jesus Christ is crowned King of kings and Lord of lords at the Second Coming.
  4. JESUS ALONE RECONCILES THE LOST (Colossians 1:20-21)
    1. There is no other way to Heaven, there is no other way to be saved, than by Jesus Christ.
    2. Jesus Christ stepped out of Heaven and died on the cross as our substitute in order to reconcile us to God the Father.
    3. When we understand His deity, then we understand the greatness of His death.
    4. Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, came to this Earth, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and was nailed to a cross for each of us.
  5. CONCLUSION
    1. Sin cannot be overlooked; it must be paid for or punished.
      1. Romans 6:23
    2. By the blood of His cross, Jesus Christ paid the sin debt that we owe.
    3. Have you received the gift of salvation that Jesus offers to you?
    4. Do you know Jesus personally? If not, you can pray to Him today by asking Him to come into your life.
    5. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life.
    6. Romans 10:9-10
    7. Romans 10:13
