It's Time To Grow Up

1 Corinthians 2:1 – 3:3

    1. The problem in many churches is spiritual immaturity.
    2. Just as it is possible in the natural realm to be immature for a long time, it is also possible in the spiritual realm to simply stop growing and become an immature Christian after being born again.
    3. 1 Corinthians 2:1 – 3:3 speaks of three categories of persons:
      1. Natural man
        1. 1 Corinthians 2:14
      2. Carnal man
        1. 1 Corinthians 3:1
        2. The carnal man is not natural or supernatural; he is unnatural.
      3. Spiritual man
        1. 1 Corinthians 2:15
    4. Each Christian needs to take inventory of himself or herself and find out where he or she is in their relationship with the Lord.
      1. The first question asked in the Bible by God of man was, “Where are you?”
        1. Genesis 3:9
    5. As believers in Jesus Christ, we should be growing Christians.
    1. How the Bible describes the natural man:
      1. Ephesians 2:3
        1. Without Jesus, we are children of wrath.
      2. Jude 19
        1. The natural person is referred to as sensual.
      3. The natural person does not have the Spirit of God, and all he has is the natural life.
    2. A natural person cannot grow:
      1. The natural man has no spiritual activation.
        1. The Holy Spirit is not activating, motivating his life.
      2. The natural man has no spiritual appreciation.

          1. The word “receiveth” in this passage means “to welcome.”
          2. The natural person does not welcome spiritual things.
        2. 1 Corinthians 1:18
          1. The natural person does not get or understand spiritual things.
      3. The natural man has no spiritual appropriation.

          2. A person may be well-educated, but without the Holy Spirit in his life, he will not understand spiritual things until he is born again.
    3. The natural man has worldly wisdom, rather than spiritual wisdom.

        2. Worldly wisdom is deceptive.

          2. Our human, intellectual minds will never be able to understand the mysteries of God.

              1. We cannot know the things of God by natural observation – “eye hath not seen.”
              2. We cannot know the things of God by natural information – “ear hath not heard.”
              3. We cannot know the things of God by natural inspiration – “nor has it entered into the heart of man.”

  3. WITH THE CARNAL MAN, GROWTH IS IMPAIRED (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)
    1. A carnal man has been saved but has not grown spiritually.
    2. What is wrong with the carnal man?
      1. Retarded development
        1. 1 Corinthians 3:1
        2. There is nothing wrong with being a baby Christian, but there is something wrong with staying a baby Christian.
        3. The carnal man has had the opportunity and the ability to grow, but for whatever reason has chosen not to.
        4. It is a tragedy when a person can grow but does not grow.
        5. A normal Christian is spirit-filled; an average Christian, unfortunately, is carnal.
      2. Restricted diet
        1. 1 Corinthians 3:2
          1. A carnal Christian cannot handle the meat of the Word.
          2. A carnal Christian is spoon-fed sermons.
        2. There are three stages in the Christian life:
          1. The need to be fed and nurtured; when somebody feeds you.
            1. 1 Peter 2:2
          2. The ability to feed yourself.
          3. When you feed others.
            1. Hebrews 5:12
      3. Repeated divisions
        1. 1 Corinthians 3:3
        2. Carnality causes divisions in churches.
          1. People are not one in the bond of love; they do not have the Holy Spirit.
        3. Those who are carnal may even think they know the Bible, but they do not have the Spirit leading them.
    1. The spiritual man lives by the Spirit.
      1. Romans 8:9
        1. It is impossible to be saved without receiving the Spirit of God.
      2. He has been born-again; he has received the Holy Spirit.
    2. The spiritual man learns from the Spirit.
      1. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13
        1. The Holy Spirit reveals to us the things of God.
      2. John 3:27
        1. Each time we study the Bible, we should ask God to speak to us and show us what the Scriptures mean.

        1. We will never know all of God, but we can know God.

        1. God takes ordinary people and gives them extraordinary knowledge.
        2. He does this by divine revelation.
    3. The spiritual man is liberated through the Spirit.

        1. The word “judged” in this passage means “discerned.”
        2. When we are born again, our “discerner” is working.
        3. As believers, we can have real understanding.
          1. We are no longer squeezed into the world’s system.
          2. We can see through the world’s system.
            1. We know who we are, where we’re going, and what we have in Christ.
            2. We are free in the Lord Jesus Christ.
    1. If you are a natural person, you need Jesus Christ; you need to be saved.
    2. If you are a carnal person, repent today and ask God the Holy Spirit to fill you.
    3. If you are a spiritual person, keep growing in the Lord.
    4. Do you know Jesus personally? If not, you can pray to Him today by asking Him to come into your life.
    5. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life.
