How To Be A Growing Christian

1 John 2:12-14

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. Are you a growing Christian?
      1. Do you know and love the Lord Jesus better than you did last week or last year?
      2. You will never know the kind of victory that you ought to know and the kind of joy that you may have unless you learn to be a growing Christian.
    2. We are to be continually growing toward maturity.
      1. Hebrews 6:1
    3. You can be spiritually healthy and yet not mature.
    4. You can be spiritually gifted and yet not mature.
      1. 1 Corinthians 1:7
    5. What is maturity?
      1. Maturity is Christ-likeness; being like Jesus.
      2. Ephesians 4:13
      3. Maturity does not mean sinless.
  2. THE MARKS OF maturity (1 John 2:12-14)
    1. The Thrilling Wonders of Childhood
      1. 1 John 2:12
      2. Children live in the realm of feelings.
      3. Little children are wonderful, but we don’t want them to stay little children.
        1. They are lazy.
        2. They’re rude
        3. They’re selfish.
        4. They’re uncooperative.
    2. The Triumphant Warfare of Manhood
      1. 1 John 2:13-14
      2. Thank God for the workers in our church.
      3. The devil doesn’t want you to be strong. He doesn’t want you to be a worker and a warrior.
    3. The Tested Wisdom of Fatherhood
      1. 1 John 2:13-14
      2. The goal of my life and your life is to be Christ-like, which is really to be like God the Father.
        1. John 14:9
      3. Fathers…
        1. Reproduce through soul winning and discipleship.
        2. Provide for others.
        3. Have wisdom.
    4. As you mature you do not:
      1. Substitute fatherhood for young manhood.
      2. Substitute young manhood for childhood.
      3. All three are legitimate and fatherhood is a composite of them all.
        1. Fatherhood has the zeal and vision of young manhood.
        2. Young manhood has the wonder of childhood.
      4. You don’t progress from one stage to the next, you add one stage into the previous.
    5. The apostle John wrote this Scripture
      1. John could be selfish and mean like a child.
        1. Mark 3:17
        2. Mark 10:37
      2. John could be prejudiced.
        1. Luke 9:54-55
      3. John could be intolerant.
        1. Luke 9: 49-50
      4. John grew under the discipleship of Jesus.
        1. John is no longer selfish and mean.
          1. John 13:23
        2. John is no longer prejudiced.
          1. Acts 8:14-15
        3. John is no longer intolerant.
          1. 1 John 1:7
  3. THE MEANS OF MATURITY
    1. There must be the miracle of life.
      1. You can’t begin to grow until you have life.
      2. You have to get saved. You have to receive Jesus.
    2. There must be the passing of time.
      1. There is no instant maturity. You’re not going to be mature overnight.
    3. Growth requires nourishment.
      1. 1 Peter 2:2
      2. You’re going to have to feed on the Word of God.
      3. Jeremiah 15:16
    4. Growth demands the discipline of exercise.
      1. Hebrews 5:14
      2. You must exercise your spiritual senses just as you exercise your physical body.
      3. Most Christians are spiritually flabby because they have no vitality from a lack of exercise.
  4. CONCLUSION
    1. It takes life to grow.
    2. It takes nourishment to grow.
    3. It takes exercise to grow.
    4. Do you know Jesus personally? If not, you can pray to Him today by asking Him to come into your life.
    5. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life.
