John 4:4-24
(Program 1971, Airing on 8.2.09)

  1. INTRODUCTION (John 4:24)
    1. The ultimate priority and highest good is to worship God in spirit and in truth.
    2. The greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Mark 12:29-30)
  2. WE MUST WORSHIP THE RIGHT PERSON (John 4:21-24)
    1. Idolatry is to worship the wrong god.
    2. There is but one God, the Father. (1 Corinthians 8:6)
      1. Jesus called God “Father” more than seventy times in the Gospels.
    3. We don’t have to understand all there is to know about God the Father in order to love Him and to worship Him.
  3. WE MUST WORSHIP IN THE RIGHT PLACE
    1. God does not dwell in temples made with hands. (Acts 17:24)
    2. As Christians, every place and every day is sacred.
    3. Once you’re saved, you become the sanctuary. (1 Corinthians 6:19)
      1. We have a responsibility not to defile our bodies because, as children of God, our bodies become the temple of God.
    4. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we now have the privilege of worshipping God anytime and any place. (Hebrews 10:19-20)
      1. Matthew 27:51
    5. This does not mean that we can willfully forsake the assembling of ourselves together. (Hebrews 10:25) In the New Testament, to forsake the assembly was a mark that an individual wasn’t saved. (1 John 2:19)
    6. Why do we come to corporate worship?
      1. To show that God is important to us.
      2. To show that people are important to us.
    7. The significance of corporate worship is not primarily that we come to worship, but that we bring our worship to church.
  4. WE MUST WORSHIP WITH THE RIGHT PROCEDURE
    1. We worship the Lord in spirit.
      1. We not only worship God with our hands, knees, eyes, and mouth, but it comes from within; we serve God with our spirit. (Romans 1:9)
      2. Psalm 103:1
    2. We also worship God in truth.
      1. Psalm 145:18
      2. Real worship is based upon the Word of God.
  5. WE MUST WORSHIP FOR THE RIGHT PURPOSE (John 4:23)
    1. When we worship God with the right purpose, we’re not worshipping in order to get something out of it for ourselves; rather, we worship God in order to bless Him. (Psalm 103:1)
