  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. In the Great Commission, Jesus commands us to teach others about Him and to baptize them. (Matthew 28:18-20)
    2. Jesus has all authority, and we need to learn what the Bible has to say about baptism.
  2. THE BIBLICAL METHOD OF BAPTISM
    1. The Biblical method of baptism is immersion.
    2. Mark 1:9-10
    3. John 3:23
      1. The Greek word "rantizo" means "to sprinkle"; the Greek word "baptizo" means "to dip", "to submerge", "to immerse". The word used here for "baptized" literally means "immersed".
      2. The reason John went to the Jordan River, according to Scriptures, was because there was much water there.
  3. THE BIBLICAL MEANING OF BAPTISM
    1. The method and the meaning of baptism are inextricably interwoven.
    2. The Biblical meaning of baptism pictures the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    3. Baptism is an important picture of the Gospel.
      1. Romans 6:4-7
      2. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
      3. Romans 6:5
      4. Baptism also pictures our resurrection with Christ:
        1. Calvary - because we died with Him (we died to the old life).
        2. Easter - because we rose with Him (to walk in newness of life).
        3. The Second Coming - because one day, we will be raised from the grave to live with Him in a resurrected body.
    4. In Scripture, baptism always follows salvation because we are dying to the old way.

  4. THE BIBLICAL MOTIVES OF BAPTISM
    1. There are three motives:
      1. There is a Master to confess - the Lord Jesus.
        1. Romans 6:6
        2. We are not ashamed of Jesus Christ.
      2. There is a message to convey - the Gospel.
        1. The very things that baptism pictures (the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord) are what bring conviction to the hearts of people.
      3. There is a mandate to complete - the Great Commission.
