Do You Say What You Really Mean?

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

James 3:6-8

Ponder This

I want you to think about the awesome power of communication. Jesus is the example of this. Jesus spoke the truth; He is called the Word. His life is full of grace and truth. Jesus taught us that real communication comes out of the heart. Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). If you want to know what’s in the heart, listen to the words.

There is a saying that goes, “What’s down in the well comes up in the bucket.” Harsh words, a harsh heart. Negative words, a negative heart. Overly reactive words, an unsettled heart. Boastful words, an insecure heart. Filthy words, a dirty heart. Critical words, a bitter heart. Encouraging words, a happy heart. Gentle words, a loving heart. Truthful words, an honest heart. If you want to know what’s in the heart, listen to the words.

  • What do your words reveal about what’s in your heart?
  • How has your relationship with Jesus changed the way you communicate with others?
