Ponder This
Suppose you’d never seen a train, but one day I take you to see a train wreck. The cars are all tumbled over; the steam is rising into the air; there’s fire, bent metal, chaos. Then, I say, “There’s a train.” Have you really seen a train? No, what you’ve seen is a train wreck. Now, look at Adam. Is he the example of a man? No, that’s a wreck! And we are all in the image of Adam, and we get that through our first birth, our physical birth. But when we’re born again, spiritually, we take on a new image: the spiritual image of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Somebody says, “Why should I get in trouble because of Adam? I had absolutely nothing to do with Adam, and Adam had nothing to do with me.” You don’t really believe that. If Adam had died without children, you wouldn’t be here. Adam had a lot to do with you. You have the sinful disposition of Adam that you inherited from him.
We are condemned by Adam, one man, and thank God we can be saved by one Man, Jesus. It is wise and gracious that God allowed Adam to stand for us so that Jesus, our resurrected Lord, might also stand for us. That’s the reason I would rather live in Romans 5 than in the Garden of Eden. I would rather be a saved sinner than an innocent angel. We have so much more in the Lord Jesus Christ than Adam ever lost. That’s the good news of the Gospel.
