Mark 10:17-27 (Program: 2151 Air dates: 1.19.2014 & 1.26.14)

  1. PROUD MEN AT THEIR BEST ARE SINNERS AT THEIR WORST. (Mark 10:17)
    1. The rich young ruler has many admirable qualities.
      1. Enthusiastic
      2. Humble
      3. Discerning
      4. Spiritually minded
      5. Morally clean
        1. Mark 10:19-20
      6. Successful
        1. Matthew 19:21
      7. Jesus did not flatter the young man.
    2. Mark 10:18
      1. Jesus was teaching the young man two things in this passage.
        1. The young man was not good.
          1. Romans 3:10-12       
        2. Jesus Himself is God.
      2. We can’t just tip the hat to Jesus; we must bow the knee.
    3. God is a God of mercy, but He will by no means clear the guilty.
      1. Exodus 34:7
      2. If God were to clear the guilty, God Himself would become guilty.
    4. The worst form of badness is human goodness when human goodness becomes a substitute for the new birth.
  1. GOD’S PERFECT LAW CONDEMNS MAN’S SINFUL PRIDE.     (Mark 10:19-21)
    1. God is a holy God and a holy God must have holy laws.
    2. Jesus is not teaching salvation by commandment-keeping; He’s teaching the exact opposite.
    3. Commandment-keeping has never saved anybody.

    4. God gave us the law to let us know that we are sinners.
    5. The definition of sin is found in 1 John 3:4.
      1. “Whosever committeth sin transgresseth also the law, for sin is the transgression of the law.”
      2. Sin is breaking God’s law.
    6. We need the law to see that we are sinners in need of a Savior.

    7. When a man has been wounded by God’s law, then he is ready for the healing balm of salvation.
    8. The young man did not understand that law is spiritual.

      2. Matthew 5:27-28
      3. Matthew 5:21-22
    9. Jesus saw the heart of the young man and that money was his idol.
      1. Mark 10:21
    10. The law can be summarized into one statement: Love God and love your neighbor.

      2. The young man loved his money more than God.
      3. The young man loved his money more than his neighbors.
      4. The young man had broken the entire law with just one sin: greed.

  1. NO MAN CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS, BUT HE MUST SERVE ONE. (Mark 10:21)
    1. The young man had an idol in his heart.
      1. Mark 10:23-24
    2. An idol is whatever we love more, serve more, trust more, or fear more than God.
    3. The young man needed to repent and turn from his idol.
      1. 1 Thessalonians 1:9
      2. Matthew 6:24
    4. What is repentance?  Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of life.

  1. WHATEVER MASTER A MAN CHOOSES WILL MASTER THAT MAN. (Mark 10:21)
    1. Repentance cannot exist without faith.
    2. When we turn from sin we turn towards Jesus.
      1. Romans 10:9
    3. Mark 10:22 is one of the saddest verses in the Bible.
    4. The young man is given a choice between his possessions and Jesus.
    5. Every man has three opportunities to go to Heaven.
      1. To die before the age of accountability.
      2. Perfectly keep all of the law.
        1. This is really hypothetical because it cannot be done.
      3. Repent and come to Jesus.
        1. Acts 16:31
    6. When we repent and come to Jesus, we should not be ashamed and we should do it today.
      1. Mark 8:38
      2. 2 Corinthians 6:2
      3. Hebrew 3:15
