The Stars and Scars of Christmas

John 20:24-29
(Program 2452, Airing on 12.21.08)

  1. INTRODUCTION
    1. Jesus is the God-man; God in human flesh.  (Isaiah 9:6)
      1. “Unto us a child is born” – speaks of Jesus’ humanity
      2. “Unto us a son is given” – speaks of Jesus’ deity
    2. Christmas is a wondrous time as we celebrate Jesus’ birth.  But we should also remember the reason for Jesus’ birth was His eventual death on the cross, to pay the penalty for our sins; thus making a way for us to be reconciled to God.
    3. The only man-made things in Heaven are the scars of Jesus Christ.
      1. John 20:24-29
      2. Zechariah 13:6
  2. THE SCARS TELL US THAT JESUS SUFFERED
    1. People often question why God allows suffering.  The greater question, however, is not why do men suffer; the greater question is why does God suffer.
    2. God in human flesh suffered.
      1. Isaiah 53:3
      2. Isaiah 63:9
    3. God in His glory still suffers.
      1. God suffers when we grieve the Holy Spirit.  (Ephesians 4:30)
      2. Christ is the head of the church; we are the body.  When the body hurts, the head hurts.  When we suffer, He suffers. (Acts 9:4, Hebrews 4:15)
      3. We are the bride; Jesus is the bridegroom.  If the bride is unfaithful to the groom, the groom grieves.  When the church is unfaithful to Jesus, He suffers.
  3. THE SCARS TELL US THAT JESUS SYMPATHIZES
    1. Jesus has been there; He has felt; He understands our pain.
      1. Hebrews 2:17-18
      2. Hebrews 4:15
    2. The pain He allows us to have is proof of His love.  (Genesis 3:17 states “cursed is the ground for thy sake.”)
      1. Pain has a protecting purpose.
      2. Pain has a unifying purpose.
      3. Pain has a correcting purpose.
  4. THE SCARS TELL US THAT JESUS SAVES
    1. Hebrews 9:22
    2. Jesus did not have to suffer; He could have refused the cross.  But He chose to suffer and die in our place.  (John 10:18)
    3. The nails did not hold Jesus to the cross; it was love.
    4. John 3:16
    5. Isaiah 53:5
    6. 2 Corinthians 5:19
    7. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
    8. Hebrews 2:9
  5. CONCLUSION
    1. If we follow Jesus, we will have scars, too
      1. Philippians 3:10
      2. Galatians 6:17
    2. We need to remember to take our wounds to Jesus, allow Jesus to comfort us, and then to comfort others.  (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
