Taking God's Name In Frivolity

Exodus 20:7 says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.”

Profanity is one way you can take God’s name in vain, but I’ll tell you another way, and that’s frivolity. More of us use the name of God frivolously more than we do profanely. That is, we simply use the name of God carelessly.

Ephesians 5:3-4 says, “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.” What does Paul mean by “foolish talking” or “jesting”? This is a sin I’ve heard preachers commit. They have little sayings that carelessly include the name of God.

We need to remember always: God’s name is HOLY. We should never, ever use His name unless we are serious. Now, if you use humor to illustrate something, that’s fine. But I am saying using the name of God in frivolity—the Bible warns against that. It’s repugnant to the Holy name of God.
